Preparing the Subfloor for Marmoleum

The kitchen extension had created a noticeable level difference between the old and new areas of the house. Marmoleum requires a smooth and even subfloor, so detailed preparation was essential before fitting could begin.

Day One: Filling Gaps and Applying the First Screed Layer

Our first task was to prepare the floor for screeding. We carefully filled all gaps and openings in the subfloor.

This was important because any unfilled gaps could allow screed to flow away, affecting the levelling process. Once the floor was properly prepared, we applied the first screed layer to begin correcting the height difference between the original property and the extension.

Day Two: Second-Stage Screeding

On the second day, we applied a further screed layer to bring the full 35m² area to one consistent level.

This two-stage process allowed us to correct the change in height gradually and create a stable base for the final preparation work.

Day Three: Feather Finish and Sanding

Although the floor was now level, it still required smoothing before the Marmoleum could be fitted.

We applied feather-finish compound to remove small imperfections and create a smooth surface. The floor was then sanded and checked carefully to ensure it was ready for the final installation.

Precision Templating and Marmoleum Cutting

Marmoleum fitting requires accurate measuring and careful cutting, particularly in older properties where rooms, walls and corners may not be perfectly straight.

Before cutting the Marmoleum, our team created detailed paper templates of the room layout. This allowed us to transfer the exact shape of the floor onto the material and avoid errors during cutting.

After the templates were completed, we carefully cut each section of Marmoleum and test-fitted it to ensure the material sat correctly around walls, corners and room transitions. Once the fit was confirmed, the Marmoleum was fixed securely using the adhesive selected for the installation.
