Whether you are planning carpet installation, vinyl flooring, Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT), laminate flooring, Marmoleum, or safety flooring, correct measurements help reduce waste, improve fitting accuracy, and ensure a professional finish.

To begin, you will need a tape measure, paper, a pen or pencil, and ideally someone to help. Draw a simple floor plan of the room, including doorways, alcoves, fireplaces, cupboards, bay windows, or any unusual shapes. Measure the widest width and length of the room wall to wall, checking multiple points because many walls in London homes are not perfectly straight. Measure all alcoves, recesses, and doorways separately and mark them clearly on your sketch.

It is always recommended to add approximately 10cm extra to each measurement to allow for cutting and trimming during the flooring installation process. Be sure to measure into all doorways, as this helps calculate thresholds and door bars accurately. Correct room measurements help avoid ordering mistakes, reduce material waste, and ensure a smoother carpet, vinyl, laminate, or LVT flooring installation.
